Capt. John Crouch of Las Cruces

(excerpt from a letter from Richard Crouch to Milo and Evie Naranjo of Rockville,
Md., who have done a great deal of research on Capt. Crouch)
Now that I have seen your impressive work of historical scholarship on John
Crouch and Civil War New Mexico I am truly fascinated by this deeply American
story. I hope you can find all the missing pieces and have fun doing it.
I don't know whether you heard my Uncle Warren, who spends so much time
in the Southwest, mention this or not, but he has seen the inscription left
by Cpt. John Crouch of the California Volunteers on Inscription Rock in
New Mexico in, I believe, 1863.
You asked about J.R. Crouch and just by coincidence I received a couple
of days later the enclosed newsletter item about him. He sure looks a lot
older than when I last saw him. Now I realize that that was probably ten
years ago or more, and at that time the family resemblance was unmistakable.
