Ferne was born in a two-room log cabin in a hollow in Owsley Co., Ky. During WW2 Walt served in the Pacific, and Ferne worked in counterintelligence. Afterwards Walt worked in the ARMCO steel plant in Middletown. Ferne attended Miami U. of Ohio and was a legal secretary. When they retired to Fla., Ferne worked as a Guardian Ad Litem in the family courts.
