Joe was "brilliant," according to everyone I have talked to who
knew him. He spoke fluent French which he picked up in WW1. In WW1 he enlisted
twice. The first time, he was in the cavalry. The second time, he worked
for the French railroads, which were of course taken over by the military.
He often proudly told how he managed to "lose" several trains
which were loaded with champagne and other luxuries for the officers, diverting
them to the camps of veterans laid low by the flu epidemic that immediately
followed the war. He and his family left Owsley Co., Ky. for Dayton, O.
soon after his first child, Ferne, was born. He worked as a streetcar conductor,
then for Dayton Rubber, and finally for National Cash Register Co.
His wife's family disapproved of the marriage, at least initially. This
led to certain tensions which he relieved, at one point, by riding his horse
into the church in their community during Sunday services and shooting wildly
at the ceiling.
