JOHN CROUCH of Stafford Co VA

JOHN CROUCH of Stafford Co VA
(Lineage estimated by John Henry Crouch III, fits with what I [John Howard Crouch] and all other interested genealogists believe, except where I indicate otherwise).
John Crouch d 1723, Stafford Co VA;. Prior to 10 Dec 1701 John Crouch in Stafford Co VA. 20 Aug 1708 John Crouch received grant of 200 acres in North Neck, Stafford Co VA. 1709 Stafford Co VA Tax list shows John Crouch with 200 acres. John Crouch left land to son William Crouch that was in part of Stafford Co VA that later became Prince William Co VA. John Crouch may have had other children, and many hypothesize that he was the father of
Joseph Crouch b (before 1720), Stafford Co VA; d (before 05 Mar 1742)
John's one known son was William Crouch b betw. 1689 & 1702; d (after 26 Jul 1740), ; m Jane. Jane d after 26 Jul 1740. See Prince William County court records involving William Crouch. William Crouch inherited land from John Crouch that was part of Stafford Co VA which later became Prince William Co VA. 26 Jul 1740 John & Jane Crouch sold this land. [It looks to me like William sold it, from the Prince Wm Co. Records - John Howard Crouch.] [What follows is a "hypothesized family lineage" by John Henry Crouch in which the persons are real but the relationships between some of them are unconfirmed]. William & Jane Crouch had 2 sons: Jacob Crouch & Joseph Crouch.
--(1) Jacob Crouch. [Prince William County court records establish that he was son of William Crouch] John Henry Crouch's hypothesis follows: According to "Prince William Co., VA
Bond Book: 1753-1782", J. W. Johnson (1982), p.4 indicates a bond posted on 01 May
1769 by Jacob Crouch as administrator for the estate of James Crouch, deceased. If this James Crouch is [9] James Crouch, [son of Joseph Crouch]. and if his brothers [7] JOHN CROUCH and [8] JOSEPH CROUCH had moved to other parts of Virginia, and if, as hypothesized, then
[4] JACOB CROUCH is a son of [2] WILLIAM CROUCH and [2] WILLIAM
CROUCH is the older brother of [3] JOSEPH CROUCH, then [4] JACOB CROUCH
would be the first cousin of [9] James Crouch and the geographically closest relative
of [9] James Crouch. A Jacob Crouch appears in Prince William Co VA in 1782
according to "Virginia Tax Payers 1782-87 (Other Than Those Published by the United
States Census Bureau)", A. Fothergill & J. Naugle (1940). Because this is the locale
where [1] JOHN CROUCH (above) and [2] WILLIAM CROUCH (above) owned land from 1708-1740, it seems likely that this Jacob Crouch is their descendant. "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution", J. Gwathmey (1938) lists Jacob Crouch, 14th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line, no bounty land.
--(2) Joseph Crouch b ______, ______; d ______, ______.
Author's hypothesis follows: A Joseph Crouch appears in Prince
William Co VA in 1782 according to "Virginia Tax Payers 1782-87", supra. Because this
is the locale where [1] JOHN CROUCH (above) and [2] WILLIAM CROUCH (above) owned land from 1708-1740, it seems likely that this Joseph Crouch is their descendant. The same reference lists a Joseph Crouch in Montgomery Co VA in 1782 and a Joseph Crouch in Henry Co
VA in 1782. Since [10] JOSEPH CROUCH is known to have been in Henry Co VA in this time frame, and since, by family tradition, [8] JOSEPH CROUCH is believed to have been in Montgomery Co VA in this time frame, it appears that the Joseph Crouch in Prince
William Co VA in 1782 must be a third person having this name. Therefore, I have
hypothesized the Joseph Crouch in Prince William Co VA to be a son of [2] WILLIAM
CROUCH and a brother of [4] JACOB CROUCH.
John Howard Crouch's caveat: I am not sure this one is a son of William. Prince William County court records involving William Crouch do not show any connection with a Joseph Crouch. The one in Prince Wm. Co. could be Joseph, b. 1731, the son of Joseph Crouch (d. 1742, thought to be brother of Wm.) I have no information about him leaving No. Va. The one who was in Henry Co. and who briefly went to Montgomery Co. in the war could have been Joseph Crouch the son of John Crouch Sr. . John Crouch Sr. . was a son of the Joseph Crouch who d. 1742. Also there was a whole nother family of Crouches living in Montgomery Co. who are unrelated as far as I know. But on the other hand I have also heard that there was a family in Henry County when we were there that had a lot of the same names as ours, and they were involved in a lawsuit.
