Why a will?

If you have a will, you can direct how and when you want your property divided after your death and who will handle your estate. You can decrease expenses of administration and taxes.

Without a will, your property may not pass as you wish and expensive court proceedings could result.

How can I have a will drawn?

The Arlington County Bar Association sponsors a wills program for senior citizens. For those seniors who qualify the program works as follows:

Call the Lawyer Referral Service at 228-3390 to obtain the name of an attorney who has agreed to prepare simple wills for the elderly for a reduced fee not to exceed $150.00. This figure includes $35.00 paid directly by the client to the Lawyer Referral Service.
Participating attorneys will first determine whether you need a will. If so, they will interview you as to how you want your property divided. They will draft the will, then meet with your again so you may review the document and formally sign it before witnesses.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for the Senior Citizen Wills Service if:

you are a resident of Arlington County
you are 60 years of age or older
your annual income is less than $16,000
your assets, except for your personal residence, are less than $15,000 for a single, divorced or widowed person, or $25,000 for a couple
