Turn 3: Megacles's Activation

Several folks voted to initially move Leonatus, but most voted for (or at least mentioned) moving Megacles first.

The voting:

Option

Votes
Megacles recovers hits on the cavalry 6
Megacles attacks with 1-hit units, recovers 4,5 hit units 5
Megacles attacks with one 1 hit unit, recovers the 4,5, and 7 hit units 2
Megacles attacks with everybody 1

The vote's very close, but a slim majority are in favor of attacking at least with one or two units. That seems like a sensible course to me. A single hit isn't a threat to a TQ 7 unit, and it's a bit of a waste to use recovery to take off just one hit. Consider: a unit with one hit recovers (now at 0 hits) and then attacks (and takes 2 hits). Compare that with attacking (now at three hits) and then recovering (and now has only 1 hit).

There is a problem with attacking with both 1-hit units, though, and that's lack of targets. Those finished "(3)" units are right in the way of the juiciest flanks. There's little to be gained by frontal attacks, so that leaves the routed units and the exposed velite.

Because of the lack of targets, I think the "recover three HCs, attack with a 1-hit HC" course is best -- but it's outvoted! So:

Megacles's Activation
Routing, not shown: AS/VII LG h
In Pursuit: AS/XV Ex RC (w/ 4 hits)

The velite is routed and a cohort is eliminated quite handily. There is something to be said for getting those rout points in the bank. In fact, the rout situation is such that if the Epirotes can eliminate all of the routed Roman units, they'll win.

Some of the voters said Megacles shouldn't try for Momentum, but the count was about 2:1 in favor of trying. I concur. Laevinus has only a 60% chance of a successful Trump, and the consequences of failure are steep. That's the sort of decision that I love to force on my opponents.

So Megacles rolls and succeeds, dr=1.

Now should Laevinus trump? Of the people that mentioned trumping (and I should've asked) there was a 4-4 split on the issue. I'm going to break the tie by voting "no" -- at least, "not yet". Megacles is clearly not going to be doing much more damage. The threat is rather from Leonatus, who has lots of recovery and rally to do. Let's hold off to see whether he gets Momentum (50% chance) and worry about the trump then.

Incidently, more than one voter mentioned using Pyrrhus to Trump Laevinus's Trump, but that's not an option. There are three situations in which you can trump. First, there's Active Player Trump: you try to activate a high-rated leader when it's a friendly low-rated leader's turn. Second, if an APT succeeds, your enemy can try to "Trump the Trump". Third, when your enemy gets Momentum, you can trump. None of those cases are applicable to a Trump of Megacles by Laevinus.

On to Megacles's Momentum.
